I have developed my research & planning skills across the 2 years with the invention of my AS music magazine and the making of a horror trailer. I understand that research is important as you obtain information which benefits you while the production. Also, through research, you are able to create a product which meet expectations of a target audience as you know the codes and conventions which are required. In AS, my task was to imitate a real media magazine to demonstrate if I’m able to create a magazine that is not my own. There was no research or planning done as the only thing I had to do was to recreate the magazine. My preliminary task was to devise a front cover for a college magazine to illustrate my understanding of the conventions. Media Language is the codes of a specific text. It's a way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to the audience. Camera, sound editing, Mise-en-scene, semiotics & ideologies are all used to demonstrate meaning to the audience. In this essay, I'm going t o analyse and evaluate how technical, symbolic, audio codes and written codes have been used effectively in Terror House’s trailer ‘Bedeviled’ Symbolic codes refers to lighting, colours, key signifiers and mise-en-scene which is used to convey a certain theme, the character itself and the genre. In the Bedeviled, the antagonist’s clothes were either black or white. The colour black has connotations of death and evil. Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown. In horror films and trailers, according to the theorist Hall, audience interpret texts very differently. The 'Dominant Reading' where they accept the preferred reading, the 'Negotiated Reading' where they question the reading, and the 'Oppositional Reading' is where they reject it. I will be using Terror House's trailer, Bedeviled, to apply, analyse and evaluate how the audiences fulfil their purpose. The first audience theory I will be applying is Cover Jones's desensitisation theory. Desensitisation theory by Mary Cover Jones which says that the more violence viewers are exposed to in the media over a period, the less sensitive we become it. In the trailer, Bedeviled, there’s barely any violence that the audience are exposed to. The snapping of the neck can be seen as violence. Representation in horror films are demonstrated through the characters and the themes. The five theories that i will be addressing and applying to Ghostly Studios 'Hunted Trailer' are The Gaze, The Final Girl, Religion and Sexuality, Hegemony and The Monster/Other. Within horror films, 'The gaze' also known as the 'Male gaze' is commonly presented, especially in slasher films. Mulvey argues that women in horror are objectified on the screen with a point of view camera which intentionally focuses on their body. It's always from a male perspective (hence why it's called Male gaze) , making them voyeurs. In the Hunted, there's no use of the male gaze used. It would of been better if they had included the gaze as it signifies that male have more power over the females. It could of been used to demonstrated the killer's power over the female victims. In horror films and trailer, according to theorist Warren Buckland, Genre creates expectations that condition our responses. Genre is a tool which helps study the audience by dividing them into different categories based on similarities in the narrative elements. In this essay, I'll be analysing the concept of genre and how it is has been applied in Terror House's ' Bedeviled '. 15 seconds into the trailer, I am able to identify that it is a horror trailer as it uses the typical conventions such as low-key lit areas to set the mood and atmosphere of the trailer. It's supernatural/psychological trailer as it uses the convention of young girls normally being victimize. A real media trailer which supports this is The Exorcist which set the boundary for supernatural films of today. They play on the fear of the unknown as they don't know what happening.
